Synopsis of the Film

“Forget it! I’m stayin’ right where I am. It’s gonna take you and the police department and the fire department and the National Guard to get me outta here!” — Norma Rae, to the Stevens management

The 1979 film tells the story of Norma Rae, a young single mother and textile worker in the J.P. Stevens textile mill in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Played by Sally Field, the title character is based off the real-life union organizer, Crystal Lee Sutton. The film accurately portrays the struggles of Southern mill workers and the severe consequences if they attempted to unionize. Despite the dangers involved, Norma Rae ultimately takes a stand and wins the rights of Stevens workers to vote for the union.
